The Role of Game Theory in Learning Pathways

Decision modeling offers a useful vocabulary for a problem education has always had.

A semester is a long sequence of decisions. A student decides how to allocate attention. An instructor decides whether to move on or revisit. An advisor decides where to spend limited contact time. An administrator decides how to sequence a curriculum. Each decision changes the conditions the others operate under.

This is the structure that decision modeling and game theory were developed to describe: multiple actors, incomplete information, sequential choices, interdependent outcomes. The framing is not a metaphor — it is a reasonably precise description of the situation.

01What the framing makes visible

  • 01Pathways as sequences. An outcome is the product of a chain of decisions, not a single moment.
  • 02Interdependence. An instructional decision changes the payoff structure for every student in the room.
  • 03Cost of information. Some signals are expensive to gather and change nothing; others are cheap and change a great deal.
  • 04Leverage. Some points in a sequence disproportionately shape everything downstream. Finding them is the interesting problem.

We are not trying to optimize students. We are trying to find the decisions that matter most.

The caution matters as much as the framing. Education is not a zero-sum game, learners are not rational agents maximizing a scalar utility, and treating them as such would produce both bad science and bad practice. We use the vocabulary of decision modeling to reason about sequence and leverage, not to reduce people to players.
